CHAPTER â¦
10
Nick saw her standing in the distance. They would meet at the bushes next to the lake.
The sun was shining on her hair, and in Nick's eyes, she looked like an angel the way she was leaning against the tree.
He walked slowly towards her. It was easier for him to rob a gas station than to meet her now.
Her parents knew nothing about their relationship. They had been together for about six months now; however, they didn't see each other many times. She was busy with her studies, girlfriends, and with sports. He was busy with all sorts of things, but she had no idea with what. It was her big frustration. They clearly lived in separate worlds. Every time they were together, it was as if they were in their own world, living in their own paradise.
âAmber,â Nick shouted from a distance.
âNick!â Amber screamed back.
Their hug was strong and long. Nick still couldn't understand why it gave him such peace.
Amber smiled and smiled; she couldn't help it.
âI missed you so much,â Amber said lovingly.
âI missed you too, Amberâ Nick replied.
They both sat down under tree where Amber stood earlier. It was a sun-drenched day and the shade from the tree made it nice and cool. They kept holding each other. Nick had his arm around her and Amber held him tightly. She could hear his heart.
With closed eyes and a smile on her face, she started to talk, âIt has really been too long this time, Nick. I can't go without you for so long. We have to see each other more often, you hear? What has kept you so busy that you couldn't see me?â she asked.
These were difficult questions to answer. Nick avoided giving her truthful answers by telling her how busy he was with family business.
He hadn't prepared very well because he had no idea how to answer the questions that followed, âDid he have a relative who owns a business? Was there a death in the family that was necessary for him to attend? Was his family in the Mafia so that he could not plan his daily life himself?â
The last question wasn't far from the truth, but Nick couldn't tell her that.
He knew all too well that he couldn't play this game for long and he wouldn't have to because he was planning to tell the truth from now on. He realized it would probably end the relationship immediately, but he wanted to take his chances. Anyway, the relationship wouldn't last much longer if he was this vague all the time; he was certain of that. Amber had made that clear to him several times. The last time she did, he had to walk away because he felt she cornered him. Later he had called her and told her he would explain everything the next time they met. That next time was now.
Amber looked up into Nick's eyes disappointed. âThis is not what we agreed on,â she said with a sad voice. âI can sense that you are lying again and not answering my questions at all.
